Description

Aggelos Giallinas (1857-1939) – Painting, watercolor on paper. Dimensions: 40.0 X 73.0 cm.

Biography:

Aggelos Giallinas (Corfu, 1857 – Corfu, 1939) was an Ionian painter, who became known mainly for his watercolors. He initially studied in Corfu with Charalambos Pahis (1872-1875) and completed his studies in Rome, Naples and Venice (1875-1877/78). Returning to Greece, he settled in Corfu, but made many trips to Constantinople, Asia Minor, Egypt, Italy, France, Spain and Switzerland depicting their landscapes.

In 1875 he began his exhibition activity by participating in the Olympia, while in 1886 he presented his first individual exhibition at the Athenian Club. There he met the English ambassador Ford, who commissioned him to create seven albums of landscapes from Constantinople, Rhodes, Venice and Spain, organized his exhibitions in Athens and abroad and introduced him to European court circles. His exhibition activity continued throughout his artistic career with individual events and participation in group exhibitions in Greece and abroad, including Parnassos and Zappeion, the Athens Art Exhibition in 1899, the Paris World Exhibition in 1900 etc.

In 1918 he presented a large solo exhibition in the GEO hall, while in 1974 the National Gallery organized a retrospective exhibition of his work. In 1902 he founded the Art School of Corfu, in which he also taught, and in 1907/8 he decorated with frescoes the Braila house in Corfu, the country residence of Empress Elisabeth of Austria. After many searches for expressive ways already from the time of his studies, Giallinas turned to watercolor, which he cultivated almost exclusively and developed into one of the leading Greek watercolorists, creating a school in his field. Painting primarily landscapes (seascapes, monuments of ancient Greece, Byzantium and the East, districts, etc.), but also some ethnographic subjects, he created poetic images that echo a classicist-romantic perception and are characterized by the balance of the composition, the particular diligence in rendering the details and the sensitivity in the rendering of color gradations.

Aggelos Giallinas (1857-1939) – Painting, watercolor on paper – An exceptional and collectible painting.
