Description
Fotis Kontoglou (1895-1965) – Painting work, Religious theme is Greek oil painting on canvas, 62.0 X 78.0 cm.
It bears the artist’s signature in the center of the work. Also this painting contains two forms, of St. Philip and St. Paul.
This painting has taken part in the “Fotis Kontoglou” exhibition at the National Gallery in 1978.
Biography of the artist:
Fotis Kontoglou was a Greek writer, painter and hagiographer born in Ayvalik, Asia Minor.
Fotis Kontoglou students were the distinguished painters Spyros Vassileiou, Giannis Tsarouchis and Nikos Eggonopoulos.
In 1913 he moved to Athens to study at the School of Fine Arts. In 1914 he left the School and left for Europe.
After a short stay in Madrid, he moved to Paris. He soon became known in the French capital.
Fotis Kontoglou is considered one of the most important artists, who paved the way for Greek painting.
However, many of his works are in other public and private collections.
