Biography:

Makis Theophylactopoulos was born in Athens in 1939.

Theophylactopoulos studied painting at ASKT with G. Moralis and graduated in 1965. During the period 1969-74 he worked in Lausanne and Paris as well as in New York with a scholarship from the Ford Foundation. Since 1988 he has been a professor of painting at the SKT of AUTH.

His paintings are usually medium or large in size, painted in oil or acrylic. Theophylactopoulos has also given large drawings in charcoal. His earlier subject matter was related to the painter’s social concerns. His idiosyncratic writing distanced his art from realistic description, although the human figure remains a dominant element in most of his painting.

Makis Theophylactopoulos enters the art of painting with movement as a vehicle. The entrance is made in 1964, early, with a series of works that will cause a sensation and premature rave reviews. They show motorcyclists wearing badges of authority, policemen and traffic wardens, and are read, in the spirit of the time, as a reaction to the suffocating political and social situation.

Thematically they are original because they represent a change: paintings with people in machines have not been presented before in the country. Stylistically, they are the studies of a student who mixes influences with a certain “innocence”: influences in the spirit of the painting education of the Academy of Fine Arts of the 60s, signs of the art of Tsarouchis, the painting freedom of Bouzianis, influences from the teacher Moralis , who was at that time the dominant personality of the School.

At the same time he makes a series of portraits
