Description

Biography of Constantin Holzer-Defanti

Constantin Holzer-Defanti (1881-1951) was an Austrian sculptor and porcelain maker.

Holzer-Defanti’s father was the sculptor Eugen Holzer, who came from Tarvisio in the Friuli countryside in north-eastern Italy.

Holzer-Defanti initially received his training from his uncle in Trento. Later studied at the academy in Munich with Wilhelm von Rümann , whose master class he became. From 1918 and 1927 he lived in Selb, where he worked as a designer for the Hutschenreuther and Rosenthal porcelain factories and, for a short time, for the Fraureuth porcelain factory.

The sculptor worked in Munich from 1927 to 1935, temporarily also in Italy. From 1935 he taught at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Linz, where he died in 1951.

Holzer-Defanti’s works lead beyond Art Nouveau to Art Deco.
His figurative designs for the manufactories mentioned are very similar and show the moving female body as the main motif, which he depicted in various poses.

Holzer-Defanti was inspired by well-known dancers of the 1920s such as Lo Hesse and Anita Berber.

His most famous works include the Korean Dance from 1919 and Pierrette from 1920, both for Rosenthal. The porcelain figure Faun is in the holdings of the Germanic National Museum in Nurembergwho designed the Holzer-Defanti for Hutschenreuther in 1926/1927.
