Description

Aginor Asteriadis (1898-1977) – Painting, watercolor. Dimensions: 47.0 X 63.0 cm.

Biography:

Aginor (Aginoras) Asteriadis (1898-1977) was a Greek painter, hagiographer and engraver of the “Generation of Thirty”.

He studied painting at the School of Fine Arts from 1915 to 1921, with teachers Roilos, Iakovidis, Vikatos and Mathiopoulos.

During the interwar period, he participated in the founding of the pioneering artistic group “Omas Techni”. A modest artist but also a pioneer, he tried to combine in his work the Greek folk tradition, the spirit of Byzantine hagiography and the lessons of cubism and other artistic currents of the early 20th century. His paintings are usually two-dimensional, but this does not mean that they are not realistic. As for its subject matter, it varies from the countryside and the urban landscape, to human nature.

In 1974 he presented his works at the “Hours” gallery in Athens. In 1976, a year before his death, the National Gallery of Greece honored him with a large retrospective exhibition. He has also participated in many other exhibitions inside and outside Greece (Rome, Ottawa, Belgrade, Moscow, Bucharest, Lugano, Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo Biennale, Alexandria Biennale, etc.).

After his death, exhibitions of his works were held in his homeland, Larissa (1984), in Athens (1987, Gallery “Yakinthos”; 1998, Cultural Center of the Municipality of Athens) and in Patras (1998).

In addition to painting, hagiography and engraving, Asteriadis also illustrated books, starting with Children’s Designs, which he published in 1933 with his colleague Spyros Vassilios. He also illustrated the Modern Greek Readings for the High School (1950), the book “In Mystras of the Palaeologans” by Eleni Valavan (published by Dodoni, Athens 1971), etc.
