Description

Alex Mylona (1920-2016) – Painting “Teapot”, watercolor on paper. Dimensions: 22.0 X 31.0 cm.

Biography:

Greek sculptor with rich work and international presence. In 2004 she founded the “Alex Mylonas Museum of Contemporary Art” in Thiseio, where her work is housed.

Alex Mylona (Alexandra Bogdanou her maiden name) was born in Athens in 1920. Her parents, Thrasyvoulos Bogdanos and Maria Chalkokondyli, realized at a young age her talent in drawing, and at the age of eight she began her first painting lessons. In 1940 she married the young lawyer and politician Georgios Mylonas (1919-1998). In 1945 she began her studies at the School of Fine Arts in the workshop of Michalis Tombros and first appeared her sculpture in the Panhellenic exhibition of 1952 in Zappeion and in 1953 in the gallery “Knossos” in Athens.

Her first solo exhibition in Athens (Pein, 1955) included works of documentary sculpture, with the main theme of the human form. Her acquaintance with international contemporary art artists and her close relationship with Paris, where she maintained a workshop and spent much of her time after 1960, played a major role in shaping her. Influences from Giacometti, Zadkin and other contemporary sculptors detected in the early stages of its searches. Its themes remain anthropocentric, but the forms are shaped and acquire an expressionist character, which is emphasized by the use of metal as a basic material.

Later, in her mature work, she will use materials such as cement and, most importantly, marble (white or colored). Instead of the dynamic angular shapes of the previous period, her sculpture adopts solid volumes and smooth surfaces, in harmonious compositions, usually abstract, with subtle references to archetypal forms.

Alex Mylona presented her work in solo and group exhibitions in Greece and abroad. He represented Greece at the 30th Venice Biennale (1960, with Giannis Spyropoulos, Aleko Kontopoulos, Lazaro Lamera and Efthymi Papadimitriou), Sao Paulo (1961) and at the Montreal International Biennale (1967). In 1986 a retrospective exhibition of her work was organized at the National Gallery.

In the mid-1990s, the sculptor settled permanently in Greece. In 2004, the “Alex Mylonas Museum of Contemporary Art” was inaugurated in Athens, where her work is housed. The Museum is dedicated to the works that Mylona created during her fifty years of consistent and passionate engagement with her art: works in marble, copper, iron and bronze, as well as drawings and paintings are exhibited on the three levels of the Museum. Since 2007, the museum building and its contents have been donated to the Macedonian Museum of Contemporary Art.

Alex Mylona died on May 25, 2016, at the age of 96.
