Biography:

Andreas Vranas (Corfu, July 17, 1870 – Athens, November 14, 1935) was a Corfu painter, who became known for his watercolors and portraits.

Andreas Vranas was born in Corfu on July 17, 1870, son of Spyridon Vranas (1824-1903) and Ioustini Kalogeropoulou. His father was a carpenter and lived with his family initially in Mandouki and later in Porta Remunda, Corfu, in the suburban area of urban Corfu.

When he was a graduate of the third grade of the School of Corfu, he dared to decide to attend courses at the Art School of Corfu and to merge with the spirit of art cultivated by great names of Corfu society, some of whom were his teachers, such as Spyridon Prosalendi (1830- 1895), Charalambos Pachis (1844-1891) and Nikolaos Aspiotis (1815-1891).

Andreas Vranas was already a painter when on October 1, 1891 he was called to enlist in the Engineer Regiment of the Greek Army. In this capacity he will appear after his discharge from the army, two years later. He enlisted again in the Engineer Regiment on February 21, 1897, shortly before the ill-fated war, and until October 1, 1897, after the conclusion of peace between Greece and Turkey.

He returned to Corfu together with the art of painting to conquer everyday life. On May 29, 1898, at the age of 28, he married Lavinia Tzora, in the district of San Rocco, which was the professional and family area in which he moved. In 1902, his first son, Konstantinos (1902-1975), was born.

In the early 1910s, the unfavorable economic conditions that prevailed in Greece, led him to the economically prosperous Greek community of Egypt, in Cairo and Alexandria. The flight abroad was followed by other fellow painters, such as Spyridon Skarvelis (1868-1942), Periklis Tsirigotis (1860-1924) and Stefanos Trivolis (1883-1944).

After 1917 and until the beginning of 1934, Andreas Vranas was constantly in Corfu, where he worked tirelessly, as shown by the production of his works. The end of the First World War reflects, in the dating of his works, his social consolidation as a painter.

His works include paintings of many techniques. Landscape paintings with water colors, hagiography with oil colors mainly on canvas, portraits with oil colors, still lifes, historical subjects and anthographies mainly with water colors.

Andreas Vranas (1870-1935) – Painting “Corfu” – An exceptional and collectible item.
