Biography:

Christos Kagaras of Ilias and Fotini, nee Stamoulis, was born on 15/1/1918 in Granitsa, Evrytania, village of Zacharias Papantoniou and Stefanos Granitsa, and died on 2/07/2010 in Lamia.

His grandmother took over his upbringing as he was orphaned before he was even a year old.

In 1930 Kagaras graduated from the Primary School of Granitsa.

In 1932 and for 1 year he was an inmate in an orphanage in Athens.

In 1933 he seeks his fortune in Egypt. He fails to secure legal residence and the authorities send him back to Greece after 6 months.

Until 1940 Kagaras went from town to town in Greece working as a farm laborer.

In 1942 he acted in the area of Agrinio as a resistance fighter against the Germans. As soon as his action became known and to avoid arrest he fled to Granitsa.

In 1943 he joined EPON and at the end of the same year he was assigned to ELAS, in the Zoula Regiment.

In 1944, he was injured in Valto in clashes between ELAS and EDES and was hospitalized in Agrinio hospital.

He returns to Granitsa persecuted by the “national organizations” because of his participation in ELAS and in 1947 he joins the “Democratic Army”.

Christos Kagaras is arrested on March 28, 1949. He is not executed on the spot thanks to the intervention of a major of the government army who is also a resident of the orphanage where Kagaras was accommodated in 1932. He is initially imprisoned in Messolonghi. They transfer him to various prisons: Agrinio, Lefkada, Amfissa, Lamia. He is released from prison in 1952.

In 1953 he opened a small atelier in Agrinio and made a living doing portraits.

In 1954 he returned to Granitsa again.

In 1955 he married Aggeliki Kagara, nee Maniati, with whom he would have 9 children.

From 1954 to 1966 he mainly deals with iconography. During this period he studied for a year and a half on Mount Athos, at the Monastery of Agios Dionysios, in the painting department.

In 1966 he met by good coincidence the architect Panos Tzelepis, Christian Zervos, Greek-French technical critic, publisher and gallerist in Paris for 50 years and Christos Theodoropoulos.

In 1970, through Tzelepis, he met Kostas Stavropoulos, a technical critic.

In 1967 he settled permanently in Lamia where he lived until his death.
