Description

Constantine King of the Greeks (1940-2023) – Frame with documents and medals of Constantine II of Greece. Dimensions 40.0 X 71.0 cm.

Biography:

Constantine II (Athens, June 2, 1940 – January 10, 2023) was the last King of the Greeks. He reigned from 1964 to 1973, when and during the regime of the dictatorship of the Colonels, the referendum of 1973 was held through which the monarchy was abolished and the dynasty was declared deposed.

After the fall of the dictatorship, a new referendum was held in 1974, in which the despotic democracy prevailed as the form of government. Constantine publicly acknowledged the result of the referendum, but in the years that followed he became involved in conspiratorial moves to overthrow it in a coup d’état.

He succeeded his father King Pavlos and played an important role in the political events that led to the imposition of the dictatorship with the most important being his involvement in the Apostasy events, when he clashed with Prime Minister George Papandreou, resulting in the resignation of the latter.

After the imposition of the junta, in April 1967, he swore in the government of dictators. In December of the same year, he organized a counter-movement against the dictatorship which failed, so he fled with his family abroad, first to Italy and then to the United Kingdom, where he settled. Since 2013 he lived permanently in Greece where he died.

For years there was a pending dispute with the Greek state regarding the royal property and Greek citizenship. The property was regulated by a law in 1992 which was annulled in 1994, while at that time he was stripped of his Greek citizenship and asked for an express and unreserved declaration of respect for the Constitution of Greece, acceptance and recognition of the state, waiver of any kind of claims and a declaration of his surname in order to receive identification information .

Constantine appealed to the European Court of Human Rights against the Greek state, seeking compensation of around 500 million euros for the royal property. After a long legal battle, the ECtHR awarded him and the other two applicants €13.7 million in damages.

Constantinos was a gold medalist in sailing at the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome, president of the Hellenic Olympic Committee (1955-1964) and a member, later honorary, of the International Olympic Committee.
