Daum Factory:

Daum is a crystal workshop based in the French city of Nancy, founded in 1878 by Jean Daum (1825–1885). His sons Auguste Daum (1853–1909) and Antonin Daum (1864–1931) were responsible for its development during the height of the Art Nouveau period.

Today the Daum workshop is the only commercial crystal maker using the “pâte de verre” process for decorative glass and crystal sculptures, a technique in which pieces of glass are placed in a refractory mold and then melted in a furnace.

The Daum family worked at the beginning of the Art Nouveau period and created one of the most famous French glassworks. Founded at the end of the 19th century, the reputation of the Daum workshop was initially associated with the École de Nancy and the pâte-de-cristal technique, a factor that contributed the most to its global reputation.

At the International Exhibition of 1900 the Daum glassworks won a Grand Prix medal. Daum glass became more elaborate. Acid etching (by Jacques Grüber) was often combined with carving, glazing and engraving on a single piece of glass resulting in the production of true glass masterpieces. The more complex creations also included utilitarian glass objects, such as knobs, but also decorative motifs in naturalistic forms.

The Daum brothers quickly became a big name in the Art Nouveau movement and serious competitors to the Gallés, so that when Émile Gallé died in 1904, they became the rulers in the field of decorative glass.

Since 2007 there has been a Daum exhibition at the Harrods department store in London.

In 1906 Daum revived the pâte de verre technique, an ancient Egyptian glass casting method, developing the method so that by the 1930s Daum window panels used the pâte de verre technique for enrichment, rather than leaded or painted glass.

Even today the Daum laboratory uses this method to produce its products.
