Biography:

Dimitris Yoldassis (1897-1993) was a Greek painter of the 20th century.

He was born in 1897 in the village of Vounesi Agrafon (today’s Morfovouni) from a family of shepherds who came from Samarina. He attended circular studies in Karditsa and Trikala where he worked at the same time.

In 1914 he entered the School of Fine Arts, first studying jewelry and then painting. His teachers were Dimitrios Geraniotis, Spyridon Vikatos and Georgios Iakovidis, while Konstantinos Maleas had a profound influence on his work.

In 1922 he appeared for the first time in a group exhibition in Zappeion together with the Association of Greek Artists. He traveled to Paris, London and New York where he worked temporarily as a stage designer.

From 1937 to 1948 he taught with some breaks due to the events of the time at Karditsa High School. During the Occupation he participated in the National Resistance as a member of the EAM. In fact, together with other artists, he painted the murals with the heroes of 1821 that were placed in the building of the National Council of the EAM in Koryschades.

After Decembriana he was imprisoned for a short time. From 1948 to 1966 he lived in Athens and later returned to Karditsa.

In 1966 he received the Golden Cross of the Order of George I, in 1982 he was honored by the municipality of Karditsa with the city’s Silver Medal, in 1984 he received the Gold Medal of the City of Athens, while in 1989 he was awarded by the Academy of Athens. He died on February 5, 1993 in Karditsa.
