Biography:

Efthimios or Efthimis Papadimitriou (Athens, 1895 – Athens, 1958) was a Greek painter and engraver. He also dabbled extensively in sketching and political cartooning.

A versatile talent, Papadimitriou initially studied Natural Sciences, while at the same time dabbling in the visual arts. He attended drawing classes with the painters E. Kontiadis and V. Hatzis, to then deal with cartooning in Athenian newspapers and magazines.
From 1922 to 1929 he lived in Paris, where he attended woodcut courses at various free academies. During the same period he visited many museums in France, Italy and Britain.

For a while he lived in Egypt, illustrating Greek parish magazines. He also traveled to Constantinople, Mount Athos and Mystras, to study Byzantine art. Fruit of this period were many woodcuts, some of which were published in books.

He presented his works in many individual and group exhibitions. In 1958, being already an accomplished artist, he was appointed Professor of Engraving at the Academy of Fine Arts. However, a few months later, death overtook him.

His works are in the National Gallery, the Athens Municipality Gallery, the Ioannina Municipality Gallery, as well as in many galleries abroad and in private collections. His engravings also adorn many books, school and non-school.

Today, Efthimios Papadimitriou is considered one of the pioneers of Greek engraving. In addition to his experimentation in engraving techniques, he was one of the first in the history of Greek engraving, together with his colleague Nikos Ventouras, who created engravings in a cubist and abstract style in the years 1947–1957.

Efthymis Papadimitriou (1895-1958) – Painting “Chalandri” – An exceptional and collectible painting.
