Biography:

The Italian painter Simone Pomardi (1760-1830) describes his trip to Greece with the British archaeologist Edward Dodwell in 1805-1806. The two probably met in Rome in 1804. He made 600 drawings and composed the narrative of the journey.

Dodwell often speaks of his partner’s ability as an editor and praises him as an observant, diligent and talented artist.

He was the first to draw landscapes of these regions (Pleuron, Thisbe, Lamia, etc.). At the end of his voyage Pomardi fell ill and was forced to sail to Zakynthos, eventually returning to Italy via Ithaca, Lefkada and Corfu.

John Bailey (1750-1819), was an English agriculturist and engraver.

Bailey engraved plates for the works of William Hutchinson, the topographer of Cumberland, Durham, and Northumberland.

He devoted attention to the natural sciences, especially mineralogy, chemistry, hydraulics, and pneumatics, used by him in promoting improvements in rural economy.

In 1795 he published an Essay on the Construction of the Plough, in which he employed mathematical calculations to demonstrate the advantages of the alterations he proposed.

He was also the joint author of the reports on the counties of Cumberland, Durham, and Northumberland, in the General Views of Agriculture series, drawn up for the Board of Agriculture.

Engraving “Ruins of Orchomenos” – A very beautiful and collectible engraving.
