Dimensions: 36.0 X 24.0 cm (without frame and passepartout).

History:

King George I, “King of the Greeks”, as was his constitutional title, (December 24, 1845 – March 18, 1913) was the longest-lived king of Greece.

Olga Konstantinovna of Russia Born on August 22, 1851 at Pavlovsk Palace in St. Petersburg, Russian Empire, one of several palaces owned by her father.

Olga Konstantinovna was the daughter of Konstantin Nikolayevich Grand Duke of Russia and Grand Duchess Olga first met her future husband, King George I of Greece, in September 1863. The latter had come to visit the Tsar Alexander II in Saint Petersburg, in order to thank him for the support he had given him on the occasion of his election as King of the Greeks.

The young monarch took the opportunity to meet Grand Duke Constantine and his family at the Pavlovsk Palace. However, George I’s stay in Russia lasted only six days, and Olga, then only twelve years old, did not seem to have much interest in the monarch.

In 1867, the two young people met again in the imperial capital, when the King of the Greeks, being invited for several months by Alexander II, paid a visit to his sister, Tsarevna Maria Feodorovna, and her husband, the Tsarevich Alexander (III).

At that time, George I was determined to find a wife and the idea of a marriage with a Russian Grand Duchess, born Orthodox, was not indifferent to him. In the Marble Palace and Pavlovsk, George met Olga and the young lady soon fell in love with him. However, the idea of leaving Russia seems to have particularly worried her and she reportedly spent whole nights crying in her room during her engagements.

With the support of his sister, George I finally asked her parents for Olga’s hand in marriage. However, faced with the possibility of this marriage, Konstantinos Nikolayevich was initially cautious. Having a particularly close relationship with his daughter, the Grand Duke considered that, indeed, at the age of fifteen, she was still particularly young to marry. At the same time, he was worried about the great distance that separated Greece from Russia.

For her part, Grand Duchess Alexandra proved much more enthusiastic about this prospect than her husband, and when some members of the imperial family reminded her of her daughter’s extremely young age, she replied that she would not remain so young forever. .

National interests eventually prevailed and it was decided that the marriage of Olga and George would take place when the Grand Duchess reached her sixteenth birthday. Until then, the young lady would continue her efforts to improve her education, and it was decided that she would continue her studies until her wedding day.
