Biography:

George Vakalos (1902 – October 2, 1991) was a Greek visual artist of the 20th century, who distinguished himself especially in scenography and painting.

He was born in Istanbul in 1902 and his real surname was Vakalopoulos. He took his first art lessons in Istanbul with teacher Lysandros Prasinos, who taught him painting and miniature painting and in 1922 he settled in Paris to study painting and scenography influenced by surrealism.

He completed his studies in 1928 and then remained in France where he worked on various theater stages until 1940 when, due to the German invasion, he was forced to flee to Greece where he worked as a stage designer and costume designer with domestic theater stages.

In 1944, he married the poet and art critic Eleni Vakalos. At the end of 1949 he participated in the founding of the Stathmi artistic group.

In 1957, together with Panagiotis Tetsis, Frantzis Franzeskakis and his wife Eleni, he founded the Vakalos School, which was the first school of decoration in Greece, while at the same time he took part in important painting exhibitions in Greece and abroad and held a series of individual exhibitions. He was a member of the Greek Chamber of Visual Arts (EETE).

He died at the age of 89 and was buried in the Second Cemetery, Patisia.
