Giorgos Bakirtzis (1923-1988) was a Greek painter of the 20th century. He was the artistic director of Skoura Films and also collaborated with Finos Films and tourism services. His well-known work is the series “Monologues” (presented in 1986).

He was born in Mytilene and came from Asia Minor. He worked from a young age while from 1938 to 1940 he apprenticed with Almaliotis, who taught him the art of the giant poster. He was admitted to the School of Fine Arts in 1939 and studied with Konstantinos Parthenis and Umberto Argyros. He then went on to study painting, engraving and graphic design at the School of Fine Arts (École des Beaux-Arts) in Paris.

From 1945 to 1964 he edited a number of posters for films of Greek cinema. In 1949 he participated for the first time in a group exhibition while in 1960 he organized the first of his fifteen solo exhibitions. Apart from Greece, his works have been exhibited in the USA, Germany and Yugoslavia. He also created covers for magazines, books and albums while writing books for the arts. He died in Athens in 1988. A year after his death, the National Gallery honored the memory of Bakirtzis with a large retrospective exhibition.

As an artist, Bakirtzis focused on man, utilizing elements from the giant poster, folk painting and expressionism to present works inspired by Greek history, politics and society.
