Biography:

The ceramist was born in Vatum on the Black Sea, with a father who was originally from Pontus, a famous doctor, with a client including the Sultan. He took care of everyone without thinking about the pay. In fact, he had also examined a then unknown Georgian revolutionary in prison, Joseph Stalin. Triantafyllides’ mother was also a doctor. Ira’s childhood was carefree until her father was kidnapped and disappeared.

The family’s life changed, while things got much worse with wars and revolutions. The young woman managed to go to Paris where she made a living as an embroiderer. Her talent later led her to London where she worked in a house owned by a Russian woman while making costumes for the theater.

In 1936 she came to Greece for a while so that she could visit her relatives in the USSR. With the advent of the Metaxas dictatorship, she did not succeed. Initially she lived in Plaka, but later she settled in Marousi, when she discovered clay completely by chance. The little house was pure paradise, tiny with a big garden. Those who have visited it describe a fairytale beauty.

Her ceramics are unique, for the enormous freedom with which she dealt with the raw material. Animal forms stand out. It is said that when Ronald Reagan crossed the threshold of the White House he had one of her white elephants.

Today, connoisseurs of ceramics and collectors consider it one of the most important forms in our country.

Ira Triantafyllidi (1896-1991) – Ceramic plate with mugs – A beautiful and collectible ceramic.
