History:

Japan has one of the oldest ceramic traditions in the world. Ceramics were created as early as the Jōmon period (ō 時代 ō Jōmon jidai, 14000 – 300 BC). History teaches that newer civilizations are influenced by their older neighbors. In this way Japan was influenced by China and Korea. Over the centuries, borrowed items have adapted to indigenous culture. The most famous cultural period of pre-military (Shogun and Samurai) Japan is the Heian period (c. 800-1200), during which influence from China and Korea peaked, and so art began to flourish.

The technical and artistic innovations of the Meiji period made porcelain one of the most internationally successful decorative art forms in Japan. This period of Japanese history lasted from October 23, 1868 to July 30, 1912. Satsuma pottery, ornate gilded and decorated with enamel, took its name from Satsuma Prefecture. This species was especially praised in the West. A major success in the West, this Japanese style actually utilized imported dyes and Western influences, and was export-oriented. Workshops in many cities competed to produce this style to meet demand from Europe and America, often producing quickly and cheaply.

Thus, the term “Satsuma” was not associated with a place of origin, but with lower quality products, created exclusively for export. Nevertheless, artists such as Yabu Meizan and Makuzu Kozan maintained the highest artistic standards, while at the same time exporting successfully. From 1876 to 1913, Kozani won awards at 51 exhibitions, including the World’s Fair and the National Industrial Fair.

Like the manufacture of Western pottery in the 21st century, Japanese ceramics were largely industrialized and more ceramics are produced today, but the Japanese tradition of ceramics in small and private furnaces continues.

Japanese porcelain box, 19th century antique Satsuma, it’s a collectible and exquisite piece.
