Biography:

Kostas Koulentianos (1918-1995) was a Greek sculptor, who spent most of his life and artistic creation in France.

He was born on December 21, 1918 in Athens. He studied sculpture at the School of Fine Arts with professors Michalis Tombro, Thomas Thomopoulos and Konstantinos Dimitriadis between 1936-1939. He fought as a volunteer in the Greek-Italian War and then participated in the National Resistance.

At the end of 1945, with the actions of Octavius Merlier, he settled in France, where he continued his studies with a scholarship from the French government.

He first studied at the School of Fine Arts and then at the Academy of Grand Sommier, while his acquaintance with the French sculptor Henri Laurents in 1947 played a decisive role in his later career, by whom he was deeply influenced as from that time Kouledianou’s distancing from academic sculpture.

In his works of the period 1947-1952, female figures dominate with an emphasis on curvature and movement, from 1952 onwards Kouledianos uses iron as a material, while from the 60s he focuses on combining sculpture with architectural elements.

In the following years, he taught at art institutions in Paris and Marseille, while he was distinguished for the creation of a series of works under the general name Generations, which represented Greece in international exhibitions.

He held his first solo exhibition in 1962 in France, while taking part in dozens of group exhibitions. He died in 1995 in Arles, France.
