Biography:

Koula Maragopoulou (Kyparissia, 1910 or 1913 – Athens, 1997) was a Greek painter of the 20th century, one of the main representatives of the expressionism of the first post-war Greek generation of visual artists.

Koula Maragopoulou was born in 1910 in Kyparissia, Messinia. She studied at the School of Fine Arts near Pavlos Mathiopoulos. She also attended classes at the school of painting of Pericles Byzantiou and Alekas Stylou-Diamantopoulou and then (from 1947 to 1950) in the workshop of George Bouzianis. The apprenticeship next to the latter proved to be a catalyst for the formation of her artistic identity. The well-known art critic Angelos Prokopiou wrote about it: Koula Maragopoulou learned from her teacher the secrets of the emotional pulse of color and the charm of spontaneity.

She developed an intense creative activity, the fruit of which was a very important number of solo exhibitions, from the first presentation of her work in the hall of the Central Hotel in 1953, until the last one, in 1992. In 1959 she participated in the Alexandria Biennale.

She has participated in many international and group exhibitions in Greece (Libra, Hellenic Soviet Union, etc.) and abroad (New York, Cairo, Rome, Trento, Paris, Tunis, London, also in the Netherlands, Canada, Belgium, Turkey, Yugo , Romania and the Soviet Union).

In 1960 she participated in the first post-war exhibition of contemporary artists from Greece organized in Cyprus. She was a founding member of the Association of Greek Artists and the Friends of Bouzianis Association.

Koula Maragopoulou was married to the poet Michalis Katsaros, with whom she had a son, the director Stathis Katsaros. She died in 1997 in Athens.

Koula Maragopoulou (1913-1997) – A very beautiful painting.
