Biography:

Lykourgos Kogevinas (1887-1940) was a Greek painter and engraver. He is considered as one of the pioneer Greeks in the art of copper engraving (oxygraphy).

He was the son of the Corfu poet and translator Nikos Kogevinas (1856–1897), who was known in the artistic circles of his time under the pseudonym Glaukos Pontios. He received his first painting lessons from Georgios Samartzis and became friendly with his fellow countrymen painters Vikentios Bokatsiambi and Angelos Giallinas.

At the age of 16 he went to Rome to study the classical works of art in the Italian capital. In 1904 he settled in Paris, together with his older brother, to study copper engraving at the Académie Julien. His interest at first turned mainly to classical painting, copying works of great artists found in the Louvre.

In 1908 he interrupted his studies to serve his military service. But he took advantage of his return to Greece to participate in a group exhibition of young people at Zappeion in 1909. At the same time he published his drawings of Paralia Lokris and Corfu River in the Panathinaia magazine.

At the end of his term, he left for Munich. There he met Dürer’s engravings and was so impressed by them that he decided to devote himself to engraving. In 1913 he settled again for a year in Paris, having in the meantime served as a reserve lieutenant in the Balkan Wars. Before his return to Paris, he participated in an exhibition of the Association of Greek Artists, of which he was a founding member.
