Description

Marilena Byzantiou (1973) – Painting, oil on wood in 6 pieces. Dimensions: 160.0 X 220.0 cm.

Biography of Marilena Byzantiou:

Marilena Liakopoulou – Byzantiou, daughter of the painter Pericles Byzantiou, a man deeply cultured and with a vision for the role of art, with studies in the History of Ancient, Byzantine and Modern Art, in Athens and Paris.

It is no coincidence that her decision to establish the Athens Art Gallery was made at a time when the capital was opening to the wider world. Athens was significantly behind, and the Athens Art Gallery, which opened before the National Gallery was completed, consciously came to fill a gap and serve artists, established and young, also acting as a bridge to the international scene. The exhibition that inaugurated the operation of the Athens Art Gallery was “Epithalamia” by Giannis Moralis.

During the dictatorship, she presented reports of a counter-revolutionary nature, resulting in the closure of the gallery, which reopened at the well-known address of Glykonos 4 in Dexameni.

Her death marks the cycle of an offer dating back to the 1950s, culminating in the founding of the now historic Athens Art Gallery at the then newly built Hilton (1963).

Biography of Pericles Byzantios:

Pericles Byzantios (1893-1972) was a distinguished Greek post-impressionist painter.

Pericles Byzantios studied painting in Munich and Paris. In 1920-1922 he served with Spyros Papaloukas and Pavlos Rodokanakis as a military painter. In 1939 he was appointed Director of the Branch of the School of Fine Arts of Hydra and Delphi.

From 1945 he undertakes exclusively the management of the Hydra Branch and by staying there he contributes to the preservation of the traditional character of the island and to the operation of the Branch as a spiritual center and nursery of young artists. Its range of subjects is very wide and includes portraits, ethnographic works, compositions and landscapes.

His works show a realistic, impressionistic mood.

Marilena Byzantiou (1973) – Painting, oil on wood in 6 pieces – An exceptional and collectible painting.
