Biography:

Nikolaos Alektoridis (1874-1909) was a Greek Asia Minor painter of the Munich School.

He was born in Caesarea, Cappadocia in 1874 and studied in Constantinople, with the painter F. Zonaro. In 1893 (according to other sources in 1903) he came to Athens, where he mainly dealt with iconography.

In 1903 he created a workshop in Athens, together with Vasilios Hatzis, in which, among others, Pericles Byzantios and George Bouzianis studied. In 1905 he became a founding member and first general secretary of the Hellenic Artistic Society.

He took part in many group exhibitions in Greece and abroad: in particular he participated in the International Exhibition of Athens in the years 1907, 1908 and 1909 (shortly before his death), in the Art Exhibition of Istanbul in 1902 and 1903, in the International Exhibition of Bordeaux in 1907, where he was awarded a gold medal, and at the exhibition of the Cairo Artistic Society in 1909.

He died on July 12, 1909 from drowning on the beach of Vouliagmeni, as he entered the sea without knowing how to swim. According to the forensic examination that followed, Alectorides’ death was caused by cerebral congestion.
