Biography:

Nikos Stefanou (1933) – Set designer, painter, ceramist, Piraeus, 1933

At the age of 17 he began to work professionally as a set designer, creating sets and costumes for troupes of the Municipal Theater of Piraeus and the Piraeus Association. In 1960, with a scholarship from the French government, he studied theater freely in Paris, while at the same time enrolling at the Ecole des BeauxArts (19601962), where he took lithography classes.

His scenographic creations are distinguished for the austerity of the means of expression and the limited construction requirements. With cheap materials (paper, wood) he creates, in essence, a painting in three dimensions, where they are combined with imagination, and always following the dramatic needs of the work, realistic, abstract and constructive elements. He does not try to convince about the realism of the space he regenerates. Instead, he is interested in presenting a different world, where the viewer can, even for a while, experience the dream and the myth.

From a very early age, in addition to his work in the theater, he was also involved in painting. The factories, with their chimneys and their smoke, are memories and emotions of his childhood, from his visits to Gazi, his father’s workplace, and dominated his first works, but even today they appear in his creations as independent batches or, transformed, incorporated as fragments into other compositions. The landscapes that dominate his compositions are revealed to the viewer behind an open window. In this way, but also as they are a fantastic composition of industrial, urban and coastal spaces, they give the feeling of a dreamy atmosphere with metaphysical, often, dimensions.

His painting is representative, without being dictated by the need for a faithful recording of reality. The descriptiveness of color is often limited and its use is arbitrary, the forms are rendered with schematic simplification or even with abstract elements, the sense of depth does not strictly obey the rules of perspective, and motley elements coexist in the same composition with a surreal mood.

The main guide of his thematic and morphological choices is the combination of reality and dream, the poetic transformation of spaces and familiar situations. At his instigation, an artistic nucleus was created in the 60’s, by him and A. Fasianos and V. Speranzas. The three artists worked for about a decade in the famous, joint studio in Kallithea, where until then only the painter A. Kepetzis worked. This common workplace and meeting place significantly influenced not only the work of the three artists, but also their other colleagues during the period ‘6070.
