History:

Konstantinos Kanaris (Psara, 1790 or 1793 – Athens, September 2, 1877) was a Greek revolutionary, a great figure of the naval struggle during the Greek Revolution of 1821 and later an admiral and politician, who served five times as prime minister of Greece in a period of 33, 5 years (1844, 1848-49, 1864, 1864-65 and 1877) and for 2 years and 3 months in total.

The blowing up of the Turkish flagship was one of the most characteristic events of the war at sea, and it made a very big impression in Europe. Using today’s terminology, we would say that it helped the Revolution a lot in communication. Both among the rebellious Greeks and among the Europeans, Kanaris was now a hero.

In June 1822, after the Greek fleet failed to save Chios from the Turkish massacre, Kanaris took it upon himself to scuttle the flagship of Kara Ali, the leader of the army that massacred the inhabitants and burned the island.

The operation would be carried out by the fire brigades of Kanaris and Andreas Pippinos. Two factors helped the project: on the one hand, that the night was very dark as there was no moon, and on the other hand, that on the lighted deck of the flagship, the approximately 2,000 Turks were celebrating Bairami, and so the guarding measures were insufficient. The fire from the burloto quickly spread to the ship.

Before they could get away from it, the fire reached the powder magazine, which blew up. As a result, there were too many victims. Among them Admiral Kara Alis, his officers and many sailors. Pippin’s gunboat came close to the flagship, but failed to destroy her. But it caused a lot of damage to her.

Painting “Konstantinos Kanaris at the Burning of the Flagship of the Turkish Fleet in Chios” – An exceptional and collectible painting.
