Biography:

Panos Valsamakis (1900–1986) was a Greek artist-ceramicist. He is the founder of art ceramics in Greece.

He was born in Ayvalik in 1900 to a wealthy family. After completing his studies at the Academy of Kydonia, he took part in the Asia Minor campaign. After the collapse of the front and the Catastrophe in 1922, it reached Smyrna and from there left for Lesvos. There he finds the rest of his family except for two brothers who were killed. His family leaves for Athens and he goes to find his brother in Marseilles.

He studied painting at the School of Fine Arts and ceramics at the School of Saint-Jean-du-Desert from 1923 to 1930. Then he returned to Greece and directed the Art Workshop of Kerameikos from 1930 to 1942, the year the factory was commissioned by German troops and ceased operations.

From 1942-1957 he was the artistic director of the ceramics factory AKEL SA. in Lavrio, owned by the National Bank of Greece. After 1957 he worked exclusively as a potter in his private workshop in Maroussi.

His valuable assistants are his son Alekos since 1957 and the bride of Aphrodite since 1959. He died in Athens on October 29, 1986 and was buried in the church of Panagia Vlacherna in Maroussi.
