Biography:

The magazine ZYGOS VII Issue 1965 mentions:

“The jug that became a painter, of the painter Mr. Alekos Fasianos. On the beach of Aegina, where the cafes are, is the shop of Petros Katsas. It used to be a cafe too, but over time the locals got used to it. Katsas builds jugs and then paints them. Upon entering his shop you will meet an old man, taciturn, with a white mustache, sitting in a chair, surrounded by his boats hanging on the walls, painted on cellophane, on plain cardboard or anywhere else.

I ask him how he started painting. He says that first, in the old days, the various shipowners asked him to paint their schooners and boats. His main job was to paint jugs or make inscriptions on ships and write their names on lifebuoys. He knew how to mix paints – barrel powders – with oil and keep his brush in a straight line. The first work was the battleship “Averoff”, which he made from a photograph. It is made with perfection and has details not only painted but also realistic. The boats that made him paint were usually sailboats.

He first made the design on fine paper and then, after transferring it to the cardboard, he filled the forms with color as he did when he painted inscriptions or jugs. Maybe that’s why his works have a linear hardness. Because he painted them not as a painter but as an inscription maker. I’m not saying this to diminish it. It’s just a finding. Katsas’s paintings have a beauty that no one can deny ”

Petros Katsas (20th century) – Painting “Boat” – A very beautiful and collectible painting.
