Biography:

Alexander I (16 December 1888 – 9 October 1934) of the House of Karajeorgević was king of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia from 1921 to 1934 (until 1929 the state was known as the “Kingdom of Serbs, Croats & Slovenes”).

He was assassinated on October 9, 1934 by a Bulgarian gunman named Vlado Chernozemski, a member of the pro-Bulgarian Internal Macedonian Revolutionary Organization (IMRO or VMRO) and an experienced marksman, in Marseille, France. Alexander remained on the Yugoslav throne for 13 years and was the longest serving ruler of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

He was born in Cetinje, Montenegro and was the second son of Peter I of Serbia and then of the Serbs, Croats & Slovenes and Ljubitsa (Љubiцa) known as Zorkas of Petrović-Niegos, daughter of Nicholas I of Montenegro.

His House was supported by Russia, but in 1858 his grandfather Prince Alexander of Serbia had clashed with the country’s Council, which convened the National Assembly. This forced him to abdicate and he was succeeded by Miloš Obrenović, the son of Michael, the great-nephew of the Milan king and the son of the last Alexander of Serbia. The Obrenovics were strongly supported by Austria and the principality was upgraded to a kingdom of Serbia. By changing the Constitution, they exiled the Karageorjevics, who were scattered in Europe.

When Alexander was 2 years old, his mother died during childbirth and then the newborn too. In 1894 his father Petros took his 4 children and went from Montenegro to Geneva. There Alexander did his basic training and then, together with his older brother George, he enrolled in the military academy of the noble Service Corps of Ag. Petersburg. In 1903 his father, with many conspirators, organized a coup. Alexander of Serbia and his wife were brutally dismembered by the conspirators. After 45 years of exile of the Karajeorgjevics, the 58-year-old Peter I became king of Serbia and invited George and Alexander to return to Serbia.

Crown Prince George had an impulsive and unstable nature. The prime minister, two army officers, etc. he was considered unfit for a king. In 1901 he kicked his servant in the stomach, who died days later. After the scandal, the 21-year-old George resigned as Crown Prince of Serbia. In 1910, the heir-apparent Alexander fell ill with typhus and barely lived; he was left with stomach problems.

Alexander I of Yugoslavia (1888-1934) – An excellent and collectible photograph.
