Biography:

Constantine I (1868-1923) was king of Greece from 1913 to 1922. His name is associated with critical periods of modern Greek history such as the unfortunate Greco-Turkish War of 1897, the successful Balkan wars, his confrontation with Eleftherio Venizelos on the Greek attitude to the First P.P. as well as the surrender of Eastern Macedonia to the Bulgarians and the subsequent naval blockade of Greece by the Entente after the November War (1916), during the National Division. Finally, the Asia Minor Campaign and the Asia Minor Disaster.

Constantine was the eldest son of King George I and Queen Olga. He was born on August 2, 1868 in Athens and was named after his grandfather, Grand Duke Constantine of Russia.

At his birth, George gave him the title of “Duke of Sparta”. However, the Council of State finally annulled this decision after an intense debate in Parliament, as the Constitution prohibited the awarding or recognition of titles of nobility to Greeks. He received his circular studies in the palaces, having as teachers, among others, the military man Konstantinos Sapundzakis, the politician and later Prime Minister Spyridon Lambros, and the historian Konstantinos Paparrigopoulos. He completed his studies at the universities of Leipzig (Leipzig) and Heidelberg (Heidelberg), where he attended some courses in archaeology, modern history, encyclopedia of law (constitutional and international), and political economy. He also received home lessons in military tactics from a German officer, while he also served in a Prussian regiment for a few weeks.

He studied at the Evelpidon Military School, from which he graduated with the rank of second lieutenant of the Infantry. In 1886 he left for Berlin, where he studied at the military school of the Prussian War Academy, from which he graduated after two years. He also arranged for the study of Ioannis Metaxas, Xenophon Stratigou and Ippokrates Papavasiliou at the same academy.

On October 15, 1889, in Athens, Constantine married Princess Sophia of Prussia, sister of the German Emperor William II. He had six children with her, three of whom reigned.
