Biography:
George I (1845-1913) was the longest-lived king of Greece. He reigned from 30 March 1863 until his assassination in 1913.
Born to a Danish prince in Copenhagen, he seemed destined for a career in the Royal Danish Navy. He was only 17 years old when he was elected king by the Greek National Assembly, which had expelled King Otto.
George’s reign of nearly 50 years was the longest in modern Greek history and was marked by territorial gains as Greece established its place in pre-war Europe.
During the First Balkan War, after Greek troops occupied much of Macedonia, George was assassinated in Thessaloniki.
