Biography:

Alexandra of Greece and Denmark (1870-1891) was the eldest daughter and third child of George I of Greece and Olga Konstantinovna of Russia and sister of the later Constantine I.

She was born at the Mon Repo mansion in Corfu on August 30, 1870. She was named Alexandra in honor of her aunt and guardian, Alexandra of Denmark, wife of Edward VII of the United Kingdom.

She married on June 5, 1889 Pavlos Alexandrovich of Russia, son of Alexander II of Russia and Maria of Hesse (Maria Alexandrovna), in Saint Petersburg, where she settled after her marriage.

While she was seven months pregnant, she was taking a walk with her friends on the Moscow Riverbed when she jumped into a boat that was moored there. She fell into the water and the next day collapsed during a ball from severe labor pains. She gave birth to her son and fell into a coma. He died six days later (September 24, 1891) at the Ilinskoe estate, aged 21. Princess Alexandra’s tomb is in the Royal Cemetery in Tatoi.

In her honor, the Municipality of Athens gave her name to a central street of the city, Alexandras Avenue, while the Municipality of Piraeus named the square at the end of Zea (Pasalimani) Vasilopaidos Alexandras Square (Alexandra Square). Alexandra Avenue in the city of Corfu, the island where she was born, also bears her name.

The Alexandra Maternity Hospital in Athens was named in her memory by her nephew Pavlos of Greece. The Maternity Hospital was connected to the University of Athens with a special responsibility in research and the fight against maternal mortality after childbirth.
