Biography:

Alice von Battenberg (25 February 1885 – 5 December 1969) was the wife of Andrew of Greece, son of George I, mother of Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, later husband of Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, and grandmother of Charles III of the United Kingdom.

At seventeen, Alice was quite beautiful. In June 1902 at Buckingham Palace he came into contact for the first time with Andrew of Greece, who had traveled with his family for the coronation of the new king of England, Edward VII. They soon became engaged, without formal proceedings, but due to Andreas’ military status the couple was forced to live apart for a few months. The bond between the two young people was forged in the complete ignorance of the parents and was in no way the result of any cohabitation.

On October 6, 1903, the civil marriage between the two young people took place in Darmstadt, and the following day two religious weddings took place, one in a Protestant church and another Orthodox in a Russian chapel.
On January 6, 1904, the couple arrived in Piraeus, where people and local politicians were waiting for them. He settled in the royal palaces, where the other members of the Greek royal family also resided.

With the start of the First Balkan War, Aliki hastened to contribute as a volunteer to the work of the Red Cross and other organizations. In Larissa, Elassona, Thessaloniki, Servia, she founded hospitals, in which she herself participated by offering help as a nurse. That is why he was honored by the King of England with the Red Cross.

On April 21, 1967, the military coup of the Colonels broke out in Athens. Alice for safety settled in the royal palaces, but a few days later she returned to her apartment. In May of the same year, Alice left permanently for England. He first settled in Windsor Castle and then Buckingham Palace.

In December, Constantine II of Greece, after a failed counter-coup, was forced to flee with his family to Rome. Despite all this, the Greek embassy did not object to a possible return of Alice to Greece. Until her death she lived a quiet life living in Buckingham’s rooms and caring for her grandchildren.

She died in her sleep in her private apartments at Buckingham Palace aged 84 on 5 December 1969.

Royal Photograph of Princess Alice of Battenberg (1885-1969) – An exceptional and collectible photograph.
