Biography:

Princess Catherine of Greece and Denmark (4 May 1913 – 2 October 2007) was the sixth child and third daughter of King Constantine I of Greece and Sophia of Prussia, sister of three Kings of the Greeks and a Queen of Romania.

She was born on May 4, 1913 in Athens and her sponsors were the Hellenic Armed Forces. Her uncle was Emperor William II of Germany.

Exile became a way of life for Princess Catherine. In 1917 she followed her parents to Switzerland, after Constantine’s Entente forced her to abdicate. In 1920 she returns to Greece where after two years her father abdicates the throne and they go into exile again this time in Sicily, where Constantine dies in 1923.

Then together with her mother and her sister Eleni they live in Florence, in the Villa Sparta where she is introduced to painting.

Catherine’s three brothers became Kings of the Greeks and her sister Helen became queen mother of Romania.

At the restoration of George II in 1935 she returned to her homeland, but the start of World War II forced her to leave once more. In 1941, with the German invasion of Greece, she fled with her brother Pavlos and his wife Frederiki to Crete and from there to Egypt and South Africa.

Catherine worked as a nurse in a hospital in Cape Town. For four years she had no news of her sister Helen, queen mother of Romania.

With the end of the war she returned to England and in 1947 married Major Richard Bradram (5 August 1911 – 5 April 1994), a rugby player. The couple met aboard the ship “Ascania”, when both were returning to England from Alexandria.

Catherine spent the remaining years of her life quietly in the English countryside busying herself with painting and until her death she had close relations with the rest of her family and the British royal family.

Catherine died in London on October 2, 2007 at the age of 94.
