Description

Serif Renkgorur (1887-1947) – Painting “Pierre Loti” hill, watercolor on paper. Dimensions: 26.0 X 40.0 cm.

History:

Dolmabahce Palace (“stuffed garden”) was the residence of the sultans and the administrative center of the Ottoman Empire from 1856 to 1922, with the exception of the period 1889-1909 when the Gildiz Palace was used. It has been operating as a museum since 1960. It is located in Istanbul, on the European side of the Bosphorus, covering a total area of about 110,000 m2. The homonymous district extends around the palace.

Its construction began in 1843, by order of Sultan Abdul Mejid I, and was completed in 1856. The cost of construction reached 5 million Ottoman gold coins, the equivalent of 35 tons of gold. 14 tons of this metal were used to cover the roofs of the 45,000 m2 palace with gold leaf.

The facade of the palace is 248 meters long. A large hall is at its core, with two wings on either side where the luxurious rooms and the royal apartments meet. The men’s living and working areas (selamliki) and the harem are located on the south and north sides respectively. The building complex also included apartments for the staff staying inside the palace, a kitchen, imaret for staff nutrition, a hospital, stables, as well as wards for the spear-wielding guards of the residence. There are a total of 285 rooms, covering an area of 45,000 square meters.

Dolmabahce was designed by the architects Karabet and Nikogios Balian. The interior decoration of the palace was undertaken by the French decorator Cesan, while several European artists undertook to create paintings to decorate the palace.

Serif Renkgorur (1887-1947) – Painting “Pierre Loti” – An excellent and collectible painting.
