Thanasis Apartis (1899-1972) – Bronze sculpture. Weight: 4.115 gr. Dimensions: 16.0 X 36.0 X 10.0 cm.

Biography:

Thanasis Apartis (Smirni, October 24, 1899 – Athens, April 1, 1972) was a Greek sculptor originally from Asia Minor. He is considered one of the most important representatives of modern sculpture in Greece, although in his early work he had developed an anthropocentric personal style and a monumental depiction of figures.

Thanasis Apartis was born in Smyrna, Asia Minor, on October 24, 1899. After the Destruction of Smyrna, Apartis’ family settled in Athens. She was initially taught sculpture by the Armenian sculptor Papazian, while she learned drawing from Vasilios Ithakisius[6]. In 1919 he left for Paris, where he studied with a grant from Elena Venizelou at the Ecole Supérieure des Beaux Arts in Paris under the sculptors Paul Landowski and Bouchard.

Afterwards, he perfected his techniques at the Julian and Grande Chaumiere Academies in Paris, where he was a student of the famous French sculptor Antoine Bourdelle, whose influence is evident and decisively marked her evolutionary path in his art.

Apartis worked in total in Paris and in two periods for thirty-two years (1919-1940 and 1945-1956). In 1940 he returned to Greece. In 1961 he was elected professor and taught at the Athens School of Fine Arts (ASKT), while in 1967 he was elected a corresponding member of the Paris Academy of Fine Arts. He received the honors of Knight of the Legion of Honor (France, 1939) and Commander of the Phoenix (1960).

He presented his works many times in Paris and Athens in group or individual exhibitions, while in 1950 he represented Greece at the Venice Biennale. He died in Athens on April 1, 1972.
