Biography:

Valias (Valentinos) Semertzidis (Krasnodar, February 18, 1911 – Athens, February 1, 1983) was a Greek painter and engraver. In the first years of his artistic career (1935-1940) he mainly deals with landscapes, in which the influences exerted on him by his teacher Kostis Parthenis are clearly visible, as well as with portraits, which also move in a purely idealistic context and often reveal his psychographic skill.

During the period of the Occupation Semertzidis expressed through his work his political positions and his opinion on the decisive role of art in critical socio-historical situations. The events of the war and his active participation in the Resistance, through the ranks of the EAM, decisively influenced the development of his painting on a thematic as well as a stylistic level.

During these years, Semertzidis gathers the material that will form the basis for many of his later works of large dimensions – then he draws the rebels as well as ordinary people he meets on the mountain. In the 1940s, Semertzidis gradually moved away from the teachings of Parthenis and now cultivated a harsh realism with color contrasts and expressionistic elements, especially in his monumental multifaceted compositions.

During the years of the Civil War, he lives in Athens and continues to work on the so-called “mountain drawings” while at the same time he begins to deal with the subjects that will define his post-war ergography (scenes of the life of workers, farmers and fishermen). Both the scenes of the daily toil of ordinary people and his landscapes are dominated by the same familiar realistic atmosphere with some new features concerning the use of color, the depiction of figures and the use of space.

With his travels and stay in Skyros and especially in Rhodes, he will come into contact with island life and the Rhodian landscape, which will be a source of inspiration for him until the end of his life. In Rhodes, he will decorate with murals the conference hall of the Chamber as well as other public buildings, as well as private residences. He also continues to dabble in portraiture.
