Biography:

Vassos Falireas (1905 – October 7, 1979) was a Greek sculptor, one of the most important representatives of the academic school of sculptures in Greece during the 20th century.

Vassos Falireas was born in Athens in 1905 and came from Kardamili in Mani. He studied painting from 1924 to 1929 at the Athens School of Fine Arts (A.S.K.T.) under the famous teachers of the School, Georgios Iakovidis and Thomas Thomopoulos.

In 1930 Falireas, in order to perfect his techniques, left for Paris and until 1935 he worked with the French sculptors Charles Despiau and Aristide Maillol. At that time, he also attended engraving lessons from the Greek engraver Dimitris Galanis, who lived in Paris.

At the Paris International Exhibition, held in 1937 in the French capital, Falireas won the gold medal for his work “Galini” (1936), which he had exhibited in the French pavilion, as well as silver medals for the works “Nude” and ” Kefali”, with which he participated in the Greek pavilion.

In the same year of his award at the Paris Exhibition, Falireas was awarded the Golden Cross of the Order of George I. He was a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in Paris, while in 1976 he was elected a member of the Academy of Athens.

Falireas died of syncope on October 7, 1979, while the jury of the 1979 Thessaloniki Film Festival was meeting, where he participated as chairman of the committee. In 1980 and 1989, by decision of the artist’s relatives and heirs, dozens of his works were granted to the National Gallery of Greece.

Henri Dropsy (21 January 1885 – 2 November 1969) was a French sculptor and medallist. He is the son of Emile Dropsy. His work was part of the art competitions at the 1924 Summer Olympics and the 1928 Summer Olympics.
