Description
Ithakisios Vasileios did not enroll himself in any School, although his works can generally be considered neo-impressionist. “My school is the eternal source of inspiration and the mental response with the landscape and the person. … Definitely Olympus and its alternating beauty, at all hours and in all seasons, is my only inexhaustible source “, says Vassilios Ithakisios.
Ithakisios Vasileios spent the last years of his life in the “Melathron Retirement Home” nursing home. He always longed for Olympus and wanted him back. In May 1977, at the age of 100, he was hospitalized in a nursing home, as he now had frequent hallucinations. During one of them, he managed to lower the railings of his bed, went to the window to look at Olympus and as he bent down, he fell below a height of one meter and was hit deadly.
Ithakisios love for the area of Olympus, had as a result that he very often mentions Litochoro as “my village”. In July 1960, the then Community of Litochoro, wanting to honor Ithakisios Vasileios, declared him an honorary citizen of Litochoro.
Today, the Municipal Gallery of Litochoro bears the name “VASILEIOS ITHAKISIOS”, as a minimum tribute to the painter, who adored and praised Olympus with his art.
