Description

Photo of Constantine I of Greece, on the battleship “Averof 6 December 1920”. Dimensions: 16.5 X 9.5 cm.

History:

Constantine I (1868-1923) was king of Greece from 1913 to 1922. His name is associated with critical periods of modern Greek history such as the unfortunate Greco-Turkish War of 1897, the successful Balkan wars, his confrontation with Eleftherio Venizelos on the Greek attitude to the First P.P. as well as the surrender of Eastern Macedonia to the Bulgarians and the subsequent naval blockade of Greece by the Entente after the November War (1916), during the National Division. Finally, the Asia Minor Campaign and the Asia Minor Disaster.

Constantine was the eldest son of King George I and Queen Olga. He was born on August 2, 1868 in Athens and was named after his grandfather, Grand Duke Constantine of Russia.

The armored cruiser “Georgios Averof” (T/K “G. Averof”), also commonly known as “Battleship Averof”, is a historical ship of modern Greece. Despite being listed as a battleship, it is a PISA-class armored cruiser (it was an exact copy of the Italian armored cruiser Pisa built in 1907 to a design by shipbuilder Joseph Orlando), built at the Orlando shipyards in Livorno, Italy in the period 1908-1911, and joined the then Hellenic Royal Navy.

The then government of Kyriakoulis Mavromichalis spent 23,650,000 gold drachmas for its acquisition. The 8,000,000 gold drachmas came from 20% of the total inheritance of Georgios Averof, which he granted in his will to the National Fleet Fund in 1899 (date of publication of the will), in which he stipulated that this amount be allocated to the construction of a warship ship that will bear his name and will be used as a Training ship and “Naval Cadet School”. The remaining amount (15,650,000 gold drachmas) was covered by the National Fleet Fund.

It is the only sample of the type (armored cruiser) preserved in the world to this day.
